Ulster folk aren’t Key-asy going when it comes to their locks.

According to a recent survey, homeowners in Northern Ireland aren’t very trusting when it comes to their keys.  The survey revealed that 70% of people refused to trust anyone else with their house keys.

That means seven out of ten people here saying that there is nowhere they would leave keys in case of emergency.

With the others that were surveyed, only 17% say they would leave them with a next door neighbour.

A garden ornament got the trust of 8% of people surveyed, and it was neck and neck at 4% a piece between a door mat and a plant pot for other hiding places.

Where do you keep your spare key?

If you compare those statistics to London, then there really is quite a contrast, with 8 out of 10 people said that they had a place to leave their spare keys.

Should some keys be lost, only 60% of people in Northern Ireland said they would change their locks, compared with 75% of people in Wales and 80% of people in London.

Only 8% of people here said they had left their door unlocked while no one was in, that’s significantly less than the 26% average across the United Kingdom.  Astonishingly 57% of those surveyed in London admitted that they left their property unlocked when the house was unoccupied.

The survey went on to say that over 75% pf people in the UK know that if they leave their door unlocked it would invalidate their insurance if there was a “break in”.  This makes the fact that that almost 4.5 million property’s are left unlocked each week, even more astounding.

If your part of the older generation, you are statistically less likely to lose your keys.  Just 20% for those over the age of 55 surveyed lost their keys at some stage, with a huge 88% of 18-24-year-olds admitted to losing their keys on at least one occasion.

When it comes to moving into new property’s, NI residents aren’t that vigilant either. Despite the chance that the previous occupants could still have door keys, only 25% of people in Northern Ireland had changed their locks when moving into a new home.
